BHP takes on Exposibram 2024

For the third consecutive year, BHP participated in Exposibram, one of Latin America’s largest mining industry events held in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais.

Marking its first year as a platinum sponsor, BHP joined key players to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of mining in Brazil.

Organised by the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM), the 2024 event welcomed around 70,000 participants, with a strong focus on the essential role mining plays in the daily lives of Brazilians, its economic impact, and its contribution to sustainable development.

BHP representatives actively engaged in Exposibram’s extensive program, with company leaders from across the Americas participating in key panels.

Additionally, BHP supported the Austrade stand and hosted a delegation of Australian businesses operating in Brazil.

“For BHP, it’s not just about bringing a diverse range of people into the organisation, we also want them to stay,” BHP general manager – Brazil, Carla Wilson, said.

Manager of health, safety, and environment for BHP’s non-operated joint ventures, Juliana Esper, spoke on a panel about psychological safety.

She reinforced BHP’s belief that “our greatest asset is our people” and stressed the importance of creating a safe, inclusive work environment.

On a panel addressing global food security, potash asset president Karina Gistelinck highlighted the significance of potash for nutrient-rich fertilisers.

“Brazil will be a core market for the potash BHP will produce at Jansen once operations commence in 2026,” Gistelinck said.

“Social value guides all of the decisions we make at BHP, along with a commitment to always do what’s right,” BHP head of corporate affairs – Brazil, Fernanda Lavarello, said.

“This includes our commitment to ensure full and fair reparation for the people, communities and environment affected by Samarco’s Fundão dam failure in 2015.”

At Exposibram, BHP also launched its new brand campaign in Brazil, emphasising its focus on future-facing commodities like copper and potash.
