BHP recognised for gender diversity efforts

BHP has been listed as a finalist in two categories of the 2024 Women in Resources Awards (WIRA).

The WIRA was established by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia’s (CME) in 2010 and seeks to enhance the recognition and participation of women in the resources sector.

BHP manager of engineering technical stewardship and governance Danielle White is in the running to win the Outstanding Young Woman in Resources award, which recognises an emerging female leader under the age of 30 that’s achieved significant career milestones in their career to date.

“Danielle’s contributions extend beyond her professional achievements,” BHP said. “Actively participating in outreach programs, she is passionate about promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers to students.”

BHP’s Bamboo Flexible Working Program is also in contention to win the Outstanding Company Initiative award, which recognises a company that’s committed to increasing the proportion of women in their workplace by implementing a gender diversity program.

The Bamboo Flexible Work Program was established over four years ago at BHP’s Newman operations and aims to attract and retain women in non-traditional roles, specifically in haul truck operations.

“Bamboo’s impact is evident in increased productivity, reduced shift changes and meal break delays, and improved equipment utilisation,” BHP said.

“The initiative has evolved beyond truck operations, with team members now being multi-skilled across various production roles. The program’s success is demonstrated by an 85 per cent female participation rate and a 25 per cent Indigenous employee participation rate within the Bamboo team.”

Mineral Resources recently celebrated Celine Mangan – its mine closure, rehabilitation and contaminated sites manager – being named a finalist to win the Technological Innovation award, which highlights females who have created a technological innovation in mining.

Winners of the 2024 Women In Resources Awards dinner will be announced at a dinner held on March 22 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
