BHP’s Pilbara Education Partnership will provide critical funding to schools in Newman and Port Hedland, Western Australia, for another year.
The Big Australian has committed more than $3 million for the program’s extension, which will allow important programs to continue in schools.
Th partnership focuses on two main areas: the ‘early years’, and pathways to employment or further study for senior students.
BHP will also continue to run the Rise Up program at the Hedland and Newman Senior High Schools.
Beginning in 2005, WA Minister for Education Tony Buti said the partnership has been the largest of its kind between industry and government in regional WA.
“I’m pleased to announce that BHP will continue to fund the fantastic Pilbara Education Partnership into 2024,” he said.
“In secondary schools, we’ve seen improved academic results, increased attendance and a reduction in student suspensions.”
Buti emphasised monitoring has shown continued improvement in outcomes for students thanks to the programs and initiatives run through the partnership.
“For the younger children, there’s improved health outcomes, as well as greater participation and engagement of parents in students’ learning,” he said.
Pilbara member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly Kevin Michel also welcomed the extension.
“Programs and initiatives made possible through the partnership make a big impact on the outcomes for students in Newman and Port Hedland, which not only helps children while they’re at school, but sets them up to live successful lives,” he said.
