BHP has partnered with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) to support the development of a First Nations director pipeline through a new education program.
A scholarship program will provide in-classroom training to 250 First Nations executives and aspiring board directors from Traditional Owner groups and Indigenous community organisations.
The program will be delivered in regional South Australia and Western Australia, where BHP has a strong operational presence.
In collaboration with the AICD, the program is designed to help strengthen governance in community-led organisations.
BHP said AICD furthers its purpose by “helping leaders to run their organisations better via education” and “improving capacities of Australia’s boards to deliver long-term and sustainable outcomes for the communities in which they operate”.
Participants will receive foundational governance training, with a leadership development component to support classroom learning.
They will also gain access to continued learning opportunities through leadership workshops, virtual coaching, and inclusion in AICD’s community of practice sessions.
The AICD highlighted that maintaining knowledge in areas such as director duties and responsibilities, financial literacy, risk management and oversight, compliance, organisational performance and leadership are critical for all governing bodies in today’s economic climate.
BHP’s support forms part of a wider effort to promote sustainable, community-led development in the regions where it operates.
