GOLF GTI

Volkswagen of America announced that the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R have been jointly named MotorTrend’s 2026 Car of the Year. , This marks the third time in its eight-generation history that Golf models have earned this prestigious honor—first in 1985 for the Golf GTI and 30 years later for the Mk7 Golf family.

Each Car of the Year contender is judged against its competitors in the field as well as by MotorTrend’s six key criteria: advancement in design, engineering excellence, performance of intended function, value, safety, and efficiency. Eligible vehicles must be all-new or significantly updated. Since 1949, MotorTrend has rigorously evaluated vehicles for these awards, later adding Truck, SUV, and Performance Vehicle of the Year. The “Of The Year” awards are recognized among the most prestigious in the industry.

MotorTrend praised the Volkswagen Golf models for their build quality, driving dynamics, modern design, advanced technology, and value. “Authentic and spirited, the Golf continues to inspire the same enthusiasm it has since its debut,” the editors noted. “A recent update refined this eighth generation, sharpening its capabilities while preserving the engaging character that makes it a joy to drive. The GTI and R pursue different goals, yet each fulfills its mission with precision and confidence.” Read More

SMMT published a new report into remanufacturing – the process of taking a used or worn part and restoring it to at least its original performance specifications. This sector already turns over half a billion pounds in the UK, covering alternators, braking systems, engines and much more. Given the opportunities available from the shift to electric vehicles, and the UK’s leadership position, the potential for our remanufacturing sector to deliver even greater economic and environmental benefits is significant.

EV components including batteries, battery management systems, inverters and motors can all be remanufactured, and doing so for just one EV battery can save more than a tonne of greenhouse gas emissions – not to mention reducing the need to extract virgin raw materials from the earth. The UK’s vehicle parc, meanwhile, is reaching record levels with 41 million on the road – still predominantly internal combustion engine powered – as owners are keeping their vehicles for longer, bringing additional opportunities for remanufacturing to support vehicles’ longer service life. We must, however, drive greater awareness across consumers, industry and government of the benefits of remanufacturing. Action to deliver a regulatory framework that promotes and enables it as part of the circular economy would help enormously, as would improved product design to facilitate ease of disassembly, reuse and recycling plus investment in skills.

The importance of recycling and reuse was but one topic on the agenda at this week’s SMMT Regional Forum – an annual event which is a key part our efforts to provide nationwide support, networking and business connections for members. Read More

UK’s automotive remanufacturing sector Britain’s automotive remanufacturing sector can drive economic growth and greater resource independence, by returning cutting-edge and costly vehicle parts to same-as-new or better condition – while saving as much as 88% in raw materials compared with a new product, according to a new report by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).1

Auto remanufacturing is now worth £500 million to the UK economy2 but the sector could claim an even bigger prize with a larger portion of a rapidly growing global market – one that is expected to expand by more than half to reach £31 billion in the next five years.3 Such an opportunity, if seized by the UK, would benefit a wide range of remanufacturers in Britain – covering everything from brakes and batteries to tyres and transmissions – driving further job creation and sustainability gains. Demand for remanufactured parts, and the available supply of the cores needed for their production, is set to be strong with a record 41.9 million vehicles on UK roads last year – and more than two in five of these more than a decade old.4 Furthermore, with around 1.6 million EVs on the road, Britain has the second largest fleet in Europe. This places the country as a potential battery remanufacturing leader, reducing maintenance costs and, in the longer-term, helping to reduce dependence on imports of scarce raw materials needed for domestic vehicle and component production. EV charging point installation stalls The UK Government announced £65million of investment in ‘at-home charging for households without driveways’ over the summer and a ‘gully scheme’ for EV motorists who have to park on the street. But the slowing rollout of public charging points threatens to undermine efforts to boost EV sales. The rate of installation is back to 2023 levels, when 16,502 public charging points were built, and it fuels fears that a lack of places for drivers to plug in is hitting demand for electric vehicles (EVs).
