AngloGold Ashanti welcomes new directors

AngloGold Ashanti has appointed two new independent non-executive directors, which will take effect from July 22.

Bruce Cleaver holds extensive commercial and mining experience. He was previously chief executive officer (CEO) of De Beers Group, a global diamond company, from 2016 to early 2023. He then became co-Chair of the company, a role Cleaver served until the end of 2023.

Before becoming De Beers’ CEO, Cleaver had been at the company since 2005. During those 11 years, he was general counsel and held various executive roles spanning business development and strategy.

On July 1 2024, Cleaver became chair and a non-executive director of Gemfields Group, a UK-based gemstone company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the Alternative Investment Market.

At AngloGold Ashanti, Cleaver will serve as a member of the audit and risk committee and the social, ethics and sustainability committee.

Also joining the company is Nicky Newton-King, the former CEO of JSE.

Newton-King is a corporate finance and securities regulation lawyer who holds broad expertise in legal, business, regulatory, capital markets and sustainability matters.

While at JSE, Newton-King was key in modernising the stock exchange through the implementation of the JSE’s socially responsible investment index, the first index of its type globally.

Newton-King is currently a non-executive director on the board of MTN Group and Investec.

At AngloGold Ashanti, she will serve as a member of the compensation and human resources committee and the social, ethics and sustainability committee.

“We are very pleased to welcome Nicky and Bruce to the board of AngloGold Ashanti,” AngloGold Ashanti chair Jochen Tilk said.

“Their appointments bring to the board extensive executive and leadership experience, coupled with wide-ranging expertise that includes capital markets, strategy and commercial insights across developed and developing markets. Their perspectives will be invaluable as we continue to create value for our shareholders.”
