A new leader to kickstart Gwalia historic mine

Genesis Minerals has appointed experienced mining executive Matt Nixon as general manager of its Leonora gold project.

The company’s newly acquired Leonora gold project lies 200km north of Kalgoorlie in the highly prospective Eastern Goldfields of WA. It has a current mineral resource of 39.3 illion tonnes at 1.6 gramms per tonne of gold, or two million ounces of gold.

Leonora gives Genesis Minerals access to the historic Gwalia underground mine, processing plant, and a suite of development projects.

Nixon will be responsible for managing all areas of Leonora, as well as a key player in the Gwalia strategic review. In particular, Nixon will oversee the safe and sustainable reset of Gwalia mine production; acceleration of development and drilling; and cost reduction across Leonora.

“We are strengthening our team of leading industry specialists as part of our strategy to build a premium Australian gold business,” Genesis managing director Raleigh Finlayson said.

“The next six months will be focused on a strategic review of Gwalia, committed to re-building the foundations to ensure a new lease of life for this prolific gold asset.

“Matt’s extensive underground mine management credentials, including prior experience at Gwalia, make him the ideal candidate to take our long life, ‘margin over ounces’ Leonora business plan forward.

Nixon has more than 14 years of industry experience in a range of senior management roles, including chief executive officer of Labyrinth Resources. He will transition to his new role over the current quarter.
