In Australia, there is no mining region quite like the Goldfields. Anchored by Kalgoorlie – Western Australia’s gold capital – and with a proud history built on gold and nickel, the Goldfields continue to attract new investments.
In 2025, soaring gold prices – recently surpassing $5000 per ounce – have only intensified activity, reaffirming the area’s status as one of Australia’s most dynamic mining hubs.
As activity intensifies, so too does the need for high-quality, local technical support, ensuring Goldfields miners operate efficiently and sustainably in an increasingly competitive global environment.
Metso recently celebrated the official opening of its Kalgoorlie operations centre, a major milestone in supporting the region’s thriving mining industry.
First opened in March, the centre is strategically positioned in the heart of the Goldfields, bringing Metso’s world-class expertise, technical support, and customer service closer than ever to local mining operations.
Supporting the Goldfields’ large slurry pump install base
With Kalgoorlie at the centre of WA’s mining activity, Metso’s new facility is set to provide unparalleled support for the region’s extensive slurry pump install base.
Metso pumps director Anthony Klein highlighted the strategic importance of this investment.
“Investing into the Kalgoorlie service centre enables Metso to actively support our current customers within the Goldfields region and also facilitates growth into the region, now and into the future,” Klein said.
Closer to the customer: immediate, local support
The new centre ensures that Metso’s customers benefit from immediate, on-the-ground support.
“There is a saying: ‘If you are not in Kalgoorlie then you are not in mining’,” Kalgoorlie operations centre operations manager Daniel Coughlan said.
“Kalgoorlie is the regional centre for the Goldfields and central to our largest clients. Our new operations centre means we are closes to our clients, supporting them and their operations with best-in-class repairs and field service.”
This proximity means reduced lead times, rapid response, and the ability to deliver the highest level of expertise directly to customer sites.
“Our clients get immediate support,” Coughlan said. “We have our facility, people and stock at the customer’s doorstep to offer the quickest delivery and lowest cost at the highest level of expertise.”
Comprehensive local and technical field service support
The Kalgoorlie operations centre is more than just a service hub for slurry pumps, it offers a full suite of services and technical support for Metso’s entire product range.
This includes new builds, repairs, inspections, and support for rotable pumps and bearing assemblies. The offering also covers parts stocking, field service, rotable rebuild programs, fixed-price repairs, inventory management and demand planning. Additionally, it includes technical training capabilities.
“Having a local contact and a significant base for technical support, backed by a global support network, is a game-changer for our customers,” Klein said.
“We’re reducing lead times to supply to the market, improving stock planning, and offering rotable rebuilds.”
Investing in the future: community and talent development
Metso’s commitment goes beyond technical support. The company is deeply invested in the Kalgoorlie community, hiring local talent, using local resources, and supporting local initiatives .
“Mining is a 24/7, 365 days a year business,” Coughlan said.
“When you work in mining it is not a 9–5 job. You are part of the community. Metso is building resources in the community, hiring local people, using local resources and also giving back to the community.”
Looking ahead, Metso is focused on continuous improvement. Plans include expanding the centre’s capabilities, such as a slurry valve rotable programme, increased field service capacity, and service exchange agreements.
“We’re also developing the next generation of talented tradespeople through vocational training and apprenticeships,” Klein said.
Delivering the best customer experience
Metso’s Kalgoorlie operations centre is a testament to the company’s dedication to its customers and the broader mining community.
By being closer to its clients and investing in local resources, Metso is poised to deliver the best customer experience in the Goldfields and beyond.
