Can you imagine an electric vehicle towing another electric vehicle that’s 111 years older? Well, you don’t have to, because here it is!
My friend Jørn Grønkjær called me up and said: “Jesper, you have to see this, I’m getting my 1913 Detroit Electric towed to an exhibition at Aalborg Congress & culture center, by a Ford F-150 Lightning!”
My jaw dropped. It’s one thing that I am lucky enough to know the guy who owns one of the very few Detroit Electric vehicles in the world, that I wrote in depth about (with video), but as it turned out, the owner of a local auto shop, Kim Hansen, had recently traveled to New York and purchased a Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat and had it shipped to Denmark in the hope of getting it legally on the road. In which he succeeded, and celebrated by fitting 26-inch wheels on it!
It was a beautiful, chill, and sunny day, and I met up with Jørn, Kim, and his daughter Helena at the place the Detroit Electric is stored. I asked Jørn why he was taking it to Aalborg, and he said he would be showcasing it at the 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns on October 1st through 3rd. The 4th largest city in Denmark, Aalborg, is hosting the conference on the conditions for unlocking the full potential of local governance in the democratic transformation towards a climate neutral, equitable, and resilient Europe. The ESCT conference is organized by the municipality of Aalborg and ICLEI — Local Governments for Sustainability.
Jørn himself would accompany the motorcade in a brand new Ford Explorer EV. It was quite the sight, so I will let the photos speak for themselves.
The approximately 80 miles was a piece of cake for the Ford F-150 Lightning to tow the Detroit Electric. No charging needed. Had it failed, though, the Detroit would have made it on its own with its +100 miles of range, albeit a bit slower!
