Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions has received a major order for its AutoMine load and haul solution for the Andesita project at Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile’s (Codelco) El Teniente copper mine in Chile.
Under the contract, Sandvik will implement an advanced automation system and deliver a new automated Toro LH621i loader this year.
The contract also includes training, workshops and essential components for comprehensive lifecycle support, and scalability terms for the purchase and delivery of additional Toro LH621i loaders and automation systems for additional tunnels through to 2028.
The order symbolises Sandvik and Codelco strengthening their automation partnership, following multiple automation solutions orders from the Chile-based copper producer in 2023.
“This contract reinforces our position as a trusted partner in mine automation and our commitment to meeting Codelco’s evolving needs,” Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions vice president – automation David Hallett said.
El Teniente mine manager Rodrigo Andrades said the El Teniente mine is set to have the highest and most intensive use of automated equipment globally.
“To sustain this process, we require suppliers with a high level of commitment and collaboration in this objective,” he said.
The two companies started working together in 2019 when Sandvik joined forces with Codelco to introduce state-of-the-art underground automation and digitalisation to the Chuquicamata mine in Chile.
In January, Codelco announced its intention to diversify its offering by acquiring Australian junior Lithium Power International.
