SMC answers the call of the heavy-duty sector

Automation products operating in the mining sector need to live up to some robust demands.

In fact, the products used in mining installations need to be so hardy that they can withstand some of the harshest environmental factors.

“A sector as important as the mining industry could benefit greatly from pneumatics and automation,” SMC Corporation global accounts manager – resources sector Vince Marcucci said.  “If one industry demands strong, reliable and quality products it’s this one.”

As one of the world’s largest exporters of coal, iron and other precious minerals, Australia’s mining sector is valued at more than $500 billion.

“It’s no secret that the industry has had its ups and downs over the years, but SMC remains an unwavering supporter of our customers in both the good and bad times,” Marcucci said.

Priding itself on close collaboration with its partners, Marcucci said SMC has the experience, knowledge, and products to best support the mining industry.

“We have spent decades refining our products to ensure that they meet the demands of the sector,” he said.

“We regularly visit sites to better understand the needs of our customers first-hand and to work closely with them in determining the best solution.”

SMC’s products are always up for the challenge

SMC offers various customised, sturdy solutions for the industry, including:

  • a wide range of solid solutions such as heavy-duty actuators, international organisation for standardisation (ISO) cylinders and positioners
  • custom-made solutions such as special cylinders adapted to working requirements or control cabinets to fit specific needs
  • durable products made of materials that can withstand high temperatures.

Marcucci broke down a few mining industry hero products:

  1. Heavy-duty actuators: “We offer an extensive range of standard and specialist actuators ideally suited for applications such as mineral extraction, mineral processing and aggregate industry applications,” he said. SMC’s heavy-duty actuator, the CS1 series, is available from 125 right through to 300mm bore sizes, while its CS2 lightweight large bore cylinder is also available from sizes 125 to 300mm
  2. ISO cylinders: “Our CP96 range is available in bore sizes 32 to 125mm,” Marcucci said. SMC offers up to 30 rod end modifications and strokes of up to 2000mm
  3. Electro-pneumatic positioners: SMC offers lever and rotary type electro-pneumatic and smart positioners. “The IP series is used for mounting on linear pneumatic cylinders, rotary actuators and diaphragm valves,” Marcucci said.
  1. Air-servo cylinder: “The IN777 series is ideal for mining applications,” Marcucci said. “The cylinder offers fast response times and high positioning repeatability, easy maintenance, and a built-in self-diagnosis function. Best of all, it’s adaptable for various fail modes including loss of signal, power and air.”
