FLSmidth locks in South American deal

FLSmidth is set to supply comminution technologies to a major copper miner in South America for its new, greenfield concentrator.

The order comprised two ball mills and three high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and is valued at about $DKK380 million ($830 million).

A ball mill is a type of grinder that uses balls to grind and remove material. FLSmidth’s ball mills have been designed to enable users to achieve their desired product quality quickly and efficiently with minimum energy expenditure and maximum flexibility.

A HPGR is known as one of the most energy-efficient comminution technologies available as lowers power consumption. FLSmidth’s HPGR provides an even grinding operation and eliminating the need for grinding media.

The order builds on a long-standing relationship with the copper miner, where FLSmidth has supplied most of the equipment for its original concentrator. FLSmidth has also provided maintenance, spare parts and process support services to the customer in the past.

“Receiving new orders from existing customers is always confirmation of a healthy and strong customer relationship. And it is particularly satisfying in this case as the customer is purchasing their first HPGRs and have selected our market leading technology,” FLSmidth chief executive officer Mikko Keto said.

The equipment is expected to be delivered in 2025.

“We look forward to supplying this best-in-class comminution package to positively contribute to both the output and operation of this new copper concentrator. This order not only supports our MissionZero ambition, it also clearly underpins FLSmidth’s market leading position within large grinding mills and HPGR.”

MissionZero is FLSmidth’s sustainability goal, which involves the company working towards zero-emissions in mining and cement by 2030.
