London, November 28, 2025, (Oilandgaspress) –– The Ocean Cleanup’s scientists and engineers have spent more than a decade studying rivers, the movement of pollution, and how to design targeted solutions that stop trash before it reaches the ocean. This rigorous, data-driven approach has delivered record-breaking trash interception year after year, preventing plastic and other harmful debris from remaining in aquatic ecosystems and threatening wildlife.
As we advance toward our mission to remove 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040, we are entering an exciting new phase: the 30 Cities Program. This initiative marks a major expansion of our river operations, aiming to cut the global flow of plastic entering the ocean from rivers by up to one-third by 2030.
Through this program, we will achieve presence in over 200 rivers worldwide, placing us firmly on track to reach our long-term goal of 1,000 rivers. In practice, this means rapid, efficient, and data-informed deployments in new locations, as well as upgrades and enhancements to systems already in operation.

Change in Action: Strengthening Resilience in Indonesia
A recent event in Indonesia’s Cisadane River highlighted why continual improvement is essential. Interceptor 020 encountered severe storms that brought exceptionally heavy rainfall, resulting in a surge of debris far beyond typical conditions. While the Interceptor is engineered to withstand Indonesia’s demanding monsoon seasons, this storm pushed the system to its operational limits.
Working with our local partners, this moment underscored the importance of boosting both interception and onshore processing capacity to cope with increasingly frequent and intense weather events. In response, we implemented key upgrades:
New river barriers were installed to expand interception coverage to 100% of the river width.
A direct-to-shore waste processing model was introduced to reduce debris buildup and ensure faster, safer handling of collected material.
These enhancements are already strengthening performance and ensuring the Interceptor remains resilient in changing climate conditions.
