Epiroc has launched the Smart DM series, featuring the new Smart DM45 and Smart DML blasthole drills. Built on the proven legacy of the DM45 and DML platforms, the Smart DM series combines Epiroc’s renowned durability and performance with the advanced intelligence of the Rig Control System (RCS 5).
The result is a lineup of drills that Epiroc says are safer, more productive, and technology-ready for the evolving needs of today’s surface mining operations. “The Smart DM represents the next evolution of our DM platform – a drill that’s safer, more productive, and equipped with the technology to drive the future of mining. By combining proven reliability with RCS 5 intelligence, the Smart DM enables our customers to drill safer, work smarter, and move confidently toward automation,” says Sergio Lopez ,
The Smart DM series retains the reliable structure and drilling power of the original DM drills – machines trusted by operations around the world for decades. “Now, with the integration of RCS 5, Epiroc modernises these workhorses to deliver next-generation automation, precision, and connectivity while preserving the rugged performance that customers depend on.”
The Smart DM drills are capable of drilling hole diameters ranging from 5 1/2 – 10 5/8 in and reaching depths of up to 205 ft, making them adaptable for both rotary tricone and down-the-hole applications.
With RCS 5, operators benefit from an intuitive touchscreen interface that integrates AutoLevel, AutoDrill 2, and High Precision GPS – bringing automation and accuracy to every hole. The result is more consistent drilling, improved blast quality, and better fragmentation across the bench, says Epiroc.
Safety remains a top priority. Built-in system interlocks, automated safety shutdowns, and optional embedded 360° cameras enhance operational awareness while reducing operator exposure.
The Smart DM cab is insulated, pressurised, and equipped with an air-ride operator seat for superior comfort and visibility in any environment. RCS 5’s intuitive controls reduce fatigue and streamline operation for both new and experienced drillers.
Maintenance is simplified through externally mounted hydraulic filters, side-mounted A/C units, and optional ground-level quick-connect fittings for fuel, oil, and coolant service. These updates “make the Smart DM series easier and safer to maintain, keeping your drills running longer and more reliably.2
Epiroc concludes: “The RCS 5 platform supports scalability toward teleremote and autonomous drilling, ensuring that operations are prepared for the next generation of intelligent mining solutions. The system architecture also maintains compatibility with Epiroc’s SmartROC and Pit Viper lines, allowing for seamless fleet integration and operator cross-training.”
