Washington, DC — The US House of Representatives passed H.R. 1949, Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2025, which would limit federal action to review the impacts of expanded liquefied methane gas exports on the economy, consumer energy costs, the climate, and local communities.
More than 150 climate and environmental justice groups sent a letter urging Members of Congress to oppose this dangerous handout to the fossil fuel industry, noting, “LNG exports negatively impact Americans by exacerbating climate change, perpetuating environmental injustices, and raising energy prices for households, small businesses, and manufacturers. These impacts must be taken into account when DOE decides whether to approve future LNG export authorizations.”
In response to today’s vote, Sierra Club Director of Beyond Fossil Fuels Policy Mahyar Sorour released the following statement:
“The explosion of LNG exports in recent years has already generated massive profits for the fossil fuel industry, while consumers and local communities pay the price. The last thing we need is even less oversight over these costly, polluting export projects. House Republicans should be focused on making investments in a clean economy and reducing energy costs for our families, not further padding the pockets of Big Oil and Gas executives. The Senate should reject this dirty bill.”
