BYD had mixed results in October when it comes to vehicle sales. On the one hand, its full battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales were up solidly, +34.5% year over year. That’s the number pure EV fans are most interested in, so good news there.
Plugin hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales, on the other hand, were down significantly. They dropped 31% year over year. All combined, then, BYD’s plugin passenger vehicle sales were down 12.7% compared to October 2024.
Looking across the first 10 months of the year as a whole, things look a little better. Here’s how things changed compared to January–October 2024:
- Plugin vehicle sales were up 12.9%
 - Full battery electric vehicle sales were up 34.5%
 - Plugin hybrid vehicle sales were down 2.7%

Overall, BYD is still clearly the king of the EV market globally. It passed up Tesla long ago now, and continues to see its BEV sales grow (while Tesla’s sales mostly decline these days). Add in the plugin hybrids and, despite the drop, no one is close to BYD. It’s basically competing with itself these days. Who wins next month — 2024 BYD or 2025 BYD?
