Glencore lifts output across Aussie mines

Glencore has delivered a strong third quarter, with improved output across its Australian operations and a firm grip on 2025 production guidance.

Zinc production climbed by 4 per cent to 411,000 tonnes on the back of higher grades at McArthur River, while energy coal output across the company’s Australian mines offset voluntary production cuts at Colombia’s Cerrejón operation.

Nickel production at Murrin Murrin eased slightly due to planned maintenance, and the closure of the Mount Isa copper mine in July has shifted Glencore’s Townsville smelter and refinery to third-party feed.

“Underpinned by a strong third quarter production performance, particularly in copper and coal, full-year 2025 production guidance for our key commodities has been maintained, with ranges tightened to reflect just one quarter remaining,” Glencore chief executive officer Gary Nagle said.

“Zinc volumes year to date are tracking up 10 per cent period-on-period while steelmaking and energy coal volumes are on track for full year outcomes towards the middle and upper ends of their respective earlier guidance ranges.”

Globally, copper production surged 36 per cent from the previous quarter, buoyed by strong results at KCC, Mutanda, Antamina and Antapaccay.

Nagle said that based on marketing performance year to date, the company expected full-year marketing adjusted EBIT around the mid-point of its recently upgraded $2.3–$3.5 billion per annum long-term through-the-cycle guidance range.

For the year so far, Glencore has produced 583,500 tonnes of copper, 28,500 tonnes of cobalt and 709,400 tonnes of zinc.

Steelmaking coal production more than doubled to 24.7 million tonnes following the integration of Canada’s EVR operations, while Australian steelmaking coal held steady at 5.3 million tonnes. Energy coal production totalled 73.5 million tonnes, largely unchanged from last year.

With stronger grades, steady coal output and a clear path ahead, Glencore enters the final quarter of 2025 with confidence in its Australian base and global operations alike.
