Kalgoorlie nickel project wins major project status renewal

Ardea Resources’ flagship nickel project will have another three years in the Federal Government spotlight, thanks to its renewal of the mine’s major project status.

The Kalgoorlie Nickel Project first received major project status in March 2022. This was in recognition of it strategic and economic importance to the national economy, as well as the Eastern Goldfields region in Western Australia.

The renewed status means Ardea and the project will have continued access to the major project facilitation agency for intergovernmental coordination. This provides for direct support to qualifying projects, fast-tracked approvals, and vital coordination between federal and state regulatory authorities.

Ardea Resources managing director and chief executive officer Andrew Penkethman said the renewal was an important milestone for both the company and the project.

“This renewal reaffirms the strategic and economic importance of the Kalgoorlie nickel project. It ensures continued support in streamlining regulatory pathways, enhancing approvals coordination, and maintaining access to project-enabling funding avenues,” he said.

“The Kalgoorlie Nickel Project stands out as a globally significant nickel-cobalt asset, located in one of the world’s premier mining jurisdictions in Western Australia. With this MPS renewal, Ardea and KNPL remain well-positioned to advance the development of an independent, sustainable, nickel-cobalt supply chain that is a key critical minerals collaboration between Australia and Japan.”

The Kalgoorlie nickel project and Goongarrie hub in Western Australia are run as a joint venture between Ardea, Sumitomo Metal Mining and Mitsubishi Corporation.
