Waymo is on a roll this week. Just after announcing that it plans to roll out in London next year, today, the self-driving vehicle company announced that it is partnering with DoorDash starting in its original robotaxi city of Phoenix, Arizona. “Waymo and DoorDash are partnering to make deliveries seamless — bringing the safety and convenience of Waymo to your grocery runs, meal orders, and more in Metro Phoenix. In the coming months, DoorDash customers may be matched with a fully autonomous Waymo vehicle for their next delivery from a participating merchant across our 315 sq mile service area in Phoenix,” Waymo writes.

So, they seem to be tiptoeing into this, as any logical process would go. Test, test, test, trial a bit, and when everything is running smoothly, start expanding like gangbusters. Given the company’s robotaxi success and recent expansion pace, I imagine it could ramp up this DoorDash partnership rapidly in the next couple of years.

“We are excited to make everyday errands easier with the Waymo Driver, offering the added peace of mind that comes with our safe and reliable technology. Through our partnership with DoorDash, we leverage our proven delivery experience to provide customers with a seamless, contact-free way to get items they need, whether it’s groceries or a quick bite,” says Nicole Gavel, Head of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Waymo.

How do you get the possibility of a Waymo delivery from DoorDash? All you have to do is opt into the autonomous vehicle delivery option from the DoorDash app when checking out.

If you receive a DoorDash delivery from Waymo, you just have to pop open the trunk via the DoorDash app when the vehicle arrives.

“We’ll begin by delivering orders from DashMart — DoorDash’s convenience, grocery, and retail stores — with plans to include more local Phoenix merchants and a wider variety of offerings over time,” Waymo adds. “Additionally, starting today, DashPass members can enjoy a special promotional offering for Waymo’s ride-hailing service in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles to get to know the Waymo Driver firsthand.”

Waymo again highlighted that its robotaxi vehicles have excelled when it comes to safety, driving around more safely than an average American driver. Since the company has done so well in Phoenix and become a norm on the streets there, its initial rollout in the city should go superbly.

“We’re proud that our Phoenix community will experience these benefits first. Waymo has been an integral part of the Metro Phoenix area since 2016, earning trust and growing our service to what has become America’s largest fully autonomous ride-hailing territory. This commitment to the communities where we operate is an important value we share with DoorDash — through Project DASH and Waymo Community‘s charitable delivery programs.”

The company also writes: “The Waymo Driver has already logged over 100 million autonomous miles on public roads and served over 10 million trips, while helping to make our streets safer. By providing a reliable and efficient delivery option, Waymo is offering another way for people to integrate the benefits of this technology into their daily routines.”
