Record production delivers turnaround for Thunderbird

Sheffield Resources has welcomed record production volumes at the Thunderbird mineral sands mine in Western Australia.

The mine is owned by Kimberly Mineral Sands, which is a joint venture between Sheffield and Yansteel. It has been in operation since January 2024, and includes a large open cut mine as well as a mineral concentration and separation plant.

As well as production at Thunderbird, the joint venture is also actively exploring adjacent tenements on the Dampier Peninsula.

According to a preliminary report for the September 2025 quarter, total ore mined increased by six per cent against the previous quarter, with approximately 3 million tonnes mined over the three months.

Record concentrate production of 249,000 tonnes was achieved, underpinned by record production of each of two key products: 203,000 tonnes of ilmenite and 46,000 tonnes of zircon concentrate.

The record production also contributed to increased shipments.

Total concentrate shipments for the quarter were 217,000 tonnes, comprising approximately 178,000 tonnes of ilmenite concentrate and 39,000 tonnes of zircon concentrate.

Sheffield Resources executive chair Bruce Griffin said the results showed the team were heading in the right direction.

“Record production for the September quarter is the result of implementing the business improvement plan developed by Kimberley Mineral Sands earlier this year,” he said.

“[It] represents a significant turnaround for the business and a base for continued business growth.”
