BYD has been growing, growing, growing. If you haven’t been tracking its rapid rise in sales, revenue, and profits, I recommend scrolling through our BYD Sales archives and looking at all of the colorful, exciting charts.

As another testament to its rise and its increasingly strong presence in the economy and in markets around the world, we recently received news that the Chinese EV company has risen up the Fortune Global 500 list and has now broken into the top 100.

Obviously, I assume you read the headline and know that the company is now ranked #91. However, what you probably don’t know is that the company shot up the list more than 50 spots in the past year! Nothing to be ashamed of, but BYD was ranked #143 on the 2024 Fortune Global 500 list.

Here’s how BYD summarizes its impressive rise:

“In 2024, BYD achieved synergistic growth across its four industries, reporting annual revenue of RMB 777.1 billion (approximately USD 107.1 billion) — a 29% year-on-year increase. The company also set a new record in new energy vehicle (NEV) sales, reaching 4.27 million units for the year, representing 41% year-on-year growth. This performance secured BYD’s position as the global new energy passenger vehicle sales champion for the third consecutive year, demonstrating strong market resilience and high-quality growth.

“Technological innovation drives BYD’s global growth. The company keeps ‘Technology-based, Innovation-oriented’ as its development philosophy, maintaining substantial R&D investment. In 2024, BYD’s R&D expenditure reached RMB 54.2 billion (about USD 7.47 billion), a 36% year-on-year increase that surpassed its net profit for the period. Notably, over 13 of the past 14 years (2011–2024), BYD’s R&D investment exceeded its annual net profit. Leveraging this sustained commitment, BYD has introduced major technologies including the Blade Battery, DiSus Intelligent Body Control System, Megawatt Flash Charging, etc.

“BYD accelerated its globalization and localization in 2025. Overseas sales of passenger vehicles and pickup trucks exceeded 470,000 units in the first half, showing strong growth momentum. The company’s overseas localization efforts is highlighted by key milestones such as the establishment of its European headquarters in Hungary, the roll-off of the first vehicle at its Brazil factory, and the delivery of its 90,000th NEV in Thailand. To date, BYD NEVs are available in 112 countries and regions worldwide, bringing sustainable technology and premium services to consumers globally.”

Looking at that summary, the one thing that came to my mind at the end was: imagine how much more growth we’re going to see from BYD in the next year or few. The company is really just starting to get rolling in a bunch of foreign markets. Building on those seeds in 100+ markets, how much more can the company’s sales grow in the coming 5 years? And what alternatives will BYD’s vehicles replace in that time? How many gas- and diesel-powered vehicles will BYD take off the streets by 2030 and beyond?

One more thing I love is that BYD continues to highlight the importance of electrification for our climate. In that graphic above highlighting BYD’s new Fortune Global 500 list ranking, the company added a key line on the bottom: “Cool the Earth by 1°C.” Nice — wear your heart, values, and the importance of a livable climate on your sleeve.
