Alcoa doubles down on sustainability

Alcoa has released its 2024 sustainability report, showcasing a year of significant achievements.

The company highlighted that 86 per cent of electricity used in Alcoa’s smelters came from renewable energy sources and achieved a 2.03:1 mine rehabilitation to disturbance ratio, reinforcing its ongoing environmental focus.

“Alcoa’s 2024 sustainability report reflects the commitment of Alcoans around the world to building a stronger, more resilient company,”  Alcoa executive vice president and chief external affairs officer Nicol Gagstetter said.

“It captures much more than just metrics; it tells the story of how we deliver on our purpose and our values as we work with each other and our stakeholders to earn our license to operate.”

Among the highlights includes zero worker fatalities or serious injuries across managed operations, the first time in which Alcoa has achieved this since 2016.

Across its global operations, Alcoa distributed $US1.6 billion in wages and benefits, invested $US8.2 million in learning and development and logged more than 12,300 volunteer hours through employee initiatives.

A major component of Alcoa’s ESG (environmental, social, and governance) strategy was allocating $US737.4 million from its green bond to eligible projects focused on renewable energy, circular economy, pollution prevention and water management.

Alcoa also completed 15 supplier site collaborations through its responsible sourcing program – five more than in 2023 – and maintained 18 aluminium stewardship initiative-certified sites.

The company’s report reflected a broader transformation, with recent strategic shifts such as the acquisition of Alumina Limited and the dual NYSE/ASX listing, positioning Alcoa for sustainable growth.

“At Alcoa, we believe a high-performance culture is both underpinned by, and delivers a safe, well-run business, focused on operational excellence and continuous improvement through accountability and adaptability,” Alcoa president and chief executive officer William Oplinger said.
