Fortescue launches Safe Spaces for WA youth

Fortescue has launched the Hedland and Newman Safe Spaces programs, an initiative aimed at providing essential support and safety for at-risk children and young people in the Pilbara.

Identified under the Pilbara Juvenile Crime Working Group and co-designed by the WA Government, industry, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), and local community subgroups, the programs were put together in a collaborative effort to drive meaningful change.

Through the Resources Community Investment Initiative (RCII), Fortescue has teamed up with BHP to commit up to $22 million over the next five years to fund these programs.

“This marks the largest single community investment ever made by Fortescue, a milestone we take immense pride in as we continue to support the wellbeing of young people in the Pilbara,” the company said.

The Safe Spaces programs will offer a temporary refuge and transport home for unsupervised and vulnerable children and young people on the streets at night in Port Hedland and Newman.

Each Safe Space will serve as a voluntary facility where young people under 18 can seek refuge. While at the Safe Space, young people will have access to food, hygiene supplies and safe resting areas.

Staff will work to connect them with a responsible adult, whether a parent, guardian, or extended family member, to ensure a safe transition home.

Beyond immediate safety, the initiative will provide culturally responsive follow-up services focused on life skills, education, and employment pathways to support long-term change.

“The Pilbara Safe Spaces Program is about more than just providing a safe place, it’s about creating real opportunities for young people to build a brighter future,” Fortescue director approvals, communities and environment Warren Fish said.

“Fortescue is committed to supporting initiatives that drive meaningful change and help create safer, stronger communities.”

By investing in youth safety and development, Fortescue is helping to build stronger, more resilient communities across the Pilbara.
