BYD continues to shatter records for plugin vehicle sales (aka “new energy vehicle” sales in China). After delivering more than 500,000 plugin vehicles in October, the company backed that up by selling a few thousand more in November. Therefore, combined, BYD sold more than one million plugin vehicles in just the last two months. There are many automakers that haven’t sold one million plugin vehicle cumulatively.
Let’s roll through some charts and numbers below to see some more of the details from November, throughout 2024, and compared to 2023.
BYD’s Plugin Vehicle Sales
Overall, BYD sold (i.e., delivered) 504,003 plugin vehicles in November. That’s a 67.2% increase over the 301,378 plugin vehicles it sold in November 2023. BYD was already the world leader in plugin vehicle sales last November. Without a doubt, no other automaker came close to the company’s total in November 2024.
BYD’s Fully Electric Vehicle (BEV) Sales
Looking only at fully electric vehicle (BEV) sales, BYD sold 198,065 BEVs in November 2024. That’s up 16.4% from the 170,150 deliveries of November 2023. Again, this is most likely a global record among automakers. It’s also a small step up from the 189,614 BEVs BYD delivered in October. Assuming the trend continues in December, it’s likely BYD will become the world’s largest BEV seller in terms of quarterly sales in the 4th quarter, taking the title from Tesla.
BYD’s Plugin Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) Sales
Looking only at plugin hybrid (PHEV) sales, BYD sold 305,938 PHEVs in November 2024, which is up a whopping 133.1% over the 131,228 deliveries of November 2023. This is certainly a global record for plugin hybrid sales in November, but it’s slightly less than the 310,912 PHEVs BYD sold in October.
“Overseas” Sales
As a final note, BYD shares that 30,977 of its new energy vehicle sales were “overseas” sales (non-China sales) in November. Of those, 28,141 were exports. (The remaining 2,836 deliveries must have been produced outside of China.)
Naturally, we’d love to see those BEV sales bars reach and pass the PHEV sales bars. I’m sure it will happen in time.
As a final note, BYD’s 504,003 sales per month extrapolated out to 12 months would be 6,048,036 sales a year. Its 198,065 BEV sales per month would mean 2,376,780 sales per year. That’s more EVs than any company has ever sold in 12 months, and it’s even more than most automakers of any kind sell in a year.
