Hyundai has finally unveiled its IONIQ 9 in its full glory. It’s a beautiful, awesome new electric vehicle with loads of utility. It’s not nearly as fun as the concept vehicle teased, particularly in the interior, but that had to be expected I guess and I’ll get to it later.

One key for the IONIQ 9, as the name implying a large size indicates, is that it offers three rows and seating for up to seven people. It also has an enormous 110.3 kWh battery which provides 620 km (385 miles) of range on a full charge. Furthermore, its E-GMP architecture allows for a fast charge from 10–80% in just 24 minutes (using a 350 kW ultrafast charger).

The IONIQ 9 shares a similar futuristic look to the IONIQ 5, which I’m excited about since I think the IONIQ 5 is the coolest looking car on the road. Also, it does offer “Relaxation Seats, Swiveling Seats, and a slidable Universal Island 2.0 console” — so elements of the concept vehicle are hidden in there somewhat.

Interestingly, this is also a rare case where the US is getting the vehicle before Europe. I guess this is due to the US obsession with the largest vehicles possible. And let me be honest — I don’t get it and I hate all the giant vehicles on the road and in the parking lot here in Florida. But it is what it is, and the IONIQ 9 will certainly be one of the ones I’m happy to see.

The IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 are two of the best electric vehicles on the market, and I think people are catching on more and more to the qualities of Hyundai’s electric vehicles. I expect the IONIQ 9 could be a huge hit in the US. “Following IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, both triple winners at the World Car of the Year Awards in 2022 and 2023 respectively, IONIQ 9 will build on this legacy of electrification excellence,” the company notes.

“IONIQ 9 embodies Hyundai Motor’s unwavering commitment and confidence in electrification,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “Based on Hyundai Motor Group’s acclaimed Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), IONIQ 9 offers outstanding interior space, providing customers with unique value while solidifying our leadership in the global EV market.”

Okay, let’s get to that interior. It is almost nothing like the wild lounge-like interior shown in the concept vehicle — look at the pictures here. However, it is still a flat floor, includes “Relaxation Seats,” and introduces “Swiveling Seats” to the market. Some more notes from Hyundai on these:

  • “The Relaxation Seats in the first and second rows can fully recline and offer a leg rest for optimal comfort, allowing up to four people to rest during vehicle charging depending on the configuration.”
  • “IONIQ 9’s Relaxation Seats feature Hyundai Motor’s first Dynamic Body Care system, including a Dynamic Touch Massage function. This system uses pressure and vibration to stimulate blood flow and circulation, reducing fatigue on long drives.”
  • “IONIQ 9 also introduces second-row Swiveling Seats, allowing the second- and third-row occupants to face each other when the vehicle is stationary.”
  • “The bidirectional armrests can be opened from the front and rear allowing easy access to the console from the second row. Universal Island 2.0 can be moved by up to 190 mm, allowing passengers in the second row to access it easily. The console also provides 5.6 liters of storage in the upper tray, as well as 12.6 liters of storage in the lower sliding tray.”
  • “IONIQ 9 also emphasizes sustainability in its material choices. These include Eco Process Leather, Recycled PET Fabric, Wool Fabric, Bio TPO/PU Skin, Bio PET/SUEDE Fabric, and Bio Paint. The vehicle also uses paint made from recycled tire waste.”

Clearly, Hyundai got quite innovative here, and I’m sure the IONIQ 9 will win awards for this innovation.

The IONIQ 9 also includes a panoramic curved display, which I find very appealing aesthetically.

Naturally, the IONIQ 9 is quick, much quicker than one would expect from a vehicle of this size and actually slightly quicker than my Tesla Model 3 SR+! It can go from o–100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds, and can go 0–60 mph in only 4.9 seconds.

You can learn much more about the IONIQ 9 from Hyundai.
