Quite a lot has happened in the past 10 days. Aside from the demented elephant getting back into the china shop, there are various big stories you may have missed, or (like me) would just benefit from being reminded of. Scroll down below for the stories and some commentary.

1. BYD’s leadership keeps shining

There are various stories here again, but the big story is that BYD is absolutely plowing forward and leading the EV revolution in countries around the world. Here are individual stories:

2. EV sales still booming

We always have a stream of EV sales reports, but one week is always extra special for me: the week we publish world EV sales reports! So, enjoy all of the sales reports below, but extra enjoy the two world EV sales reports at the top.

3. Trashing Toyota, or Toyota trashing itself

Toyota is up to its old tricks, and some new ones. Just after Donald “I hate California” Trump was reelected, Toyota went on the attack against California and its ZEV targets. I took the opportunity to argue that Toyota is digging its own grave with its approach to EVs. That sure stirred up some controversy down in the comments!

4. One core problem swings the US back into chaos

Clearly, the story of the week was the US going back to this guy. And while there are many ideas and claims as to why, there’s one core reason that is surely above and beyond anything else.

5. And the best value EVs are

Jose Pontes launched into a new series in which he tries to identify the best value EVs by vehicle class in Europe (specifically narrowing in on the Netherlands for uniform comparisons). To kick off the series, you can read about his picks in the A-segment (city car) class and in the B-segment (subcompact) class.

6. Universal Basic Income — from the sun

Jennifer Sensiba had an interesting story on how sunlight and solar panels could be a replacement for UBI (Universal Basic Income) in certain places. It’s an interesting piece, and titillating idea.

7. Solar power growth continues

Admittedly, I could have used that title during most of the last 15 years that I’ve been covering this stuff, but the numbers are so dramatically different from what they were 15 years ago that it’s almost unbelievable. The hot news of the month is the world has just hit two terawatts of installed solar power capacity!

8. Smart grid rising

The grid is getting smarter and smarter. Much of that is through virtual power plants, much of it is through bidirectional charging. As you can see, we had cool stories on both of those in the past week.

9. Level 1 charging wins the day

In a great long podcast with Phillip Kobernick, Associate Director of Energy Programs at Peninsula Clean Energy, we discussed a handful of clean energy and electric vehicle targets, but the key one was that Level 1 is the way to go to bring EV charging to all the people in apartment buildings, condos, etc. — and, thus, to meet EV charging targets. Phillip does a great job explaining what that’s the case.

10. Biden’s enormous Investing in America accomplishments

As the Solar Energy Industries Association said yesterday, “The Inflation Reduction Act has done more to expand domestic manufacturing than any other piece of legislation in American history and that is helping to accelerate the politics of the energy transition.” Exactly! And it’s not only the IRA, but also the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act. Last week, I noticed that private investments associated with these massive accomplishments have reached nearly $1 trillion. So, despite everything, or maybe especially in light of everything, we at least want to say thank you to Joe Biden for helping to revive US manufacturing and make the US a bigger cleantech economy again.

Honorable mentions:

And we’ve also got a couple of e-bike reviews to highlight again:

That’s it for now! Check in next week for more highlights. Or check in every day and come up with your own list!
