Following up on other good news stories about EV sales jumping in October, we’ve got one from Hyundai. However, there’s also a little twist.

In the US market, sales of Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 jumped a rockin’ 51% in October 2024 compared to October 2023. The model had 4,498 sales in October 2024 versus 2,979 sales in October 2023.

Now, on the flip side, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 lost sales. However, not by nearly as much. IONIQ 6 sales dropped 32% from 1,239 to 837.

There’s one more difference too. The Hyundai Kona EV is still being sold, but its sales have been dropping as the model is being phased out in favor of the newer-generation IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6. However, Hyundai doesn’t break out those sales separately, and didn’t provide trends on overall EV sales. We’ll have more info on those at the end of the quarter.

Hyundai did add another little section on awards its EVs have been winning. “Hyundai Most Awarded Automaker in Cars.com’s 2025 Top Pick EV Awards: Hyundai’s IONIQ electric vehicles have each been awarded 2025 Top Picks by Cars.com as part of their updated EV Buying Guide. The 2025 IONIQ 6 was named the Top Pick, Electric Car and Top Pick, Value EV, while the 2025 IONIQ 5 was named Top Pick, 2-Row Electric SUV,” the company wrote.

The company is definitely designing, developing, and selling some top electric vehicles. The IONIQ 5 is on the top of my list for a potential next EV. However, if we’re being honest, sales are still quite small. The IONIQ 5’s 4,498 sales in October plus the IONIQ 6’s 1,239 sales add up to 5,737 sales. Multiplying that total by 12, one would get an annualized sales rate of 68,844 vehicles in the US. It’s a start, but it’s not amazing.
