Xtracycle, one of the pioneers in cargo bikes in the US, just launched a new e-cargo model, The Hopper, which is packed with features that can help it replace many a car trip, all in a format that’s not much bigger than a standard bicycle.

There has been recent flood of new electric “cargo” bikes on the market, many of them simply beefed-up versions of standard e-bikes that would probably be better described as “utility” e-bikes, and more than a few of which are mass-production e-bikes with average quality components that have just been rebranded to meet the latest e-bike startup’s marketing strategies, and they easily attract the casual tire-kicker who just wants the lowest priced model possible. But Xtracycle has been in the cargo bike business a long time — 25+ years — and has some deep working knowledge and experience in building class-leading electric cargo bikes “that replace mundane day-to-day car trips with inspiring adventures.”

Instead of having to add on other components in order to truly haul cargo, human or otherwise, The Hopper comes with a front PorterRack and a rear Hooptie kid-carrier, which makes it simpler and more convenient for the buyer right from the get-go.

The Hopper can handle a 500-pound payload, carry two small passengers, has a top speed of 28 mph, and a riding range of up to 60 miles per charge, powered by a 48V 750W rear hub motor and 720Wh battery. It features a front suspension fork, a dropper seatpost, cargo foot-rails, integrated front and rear lighting, a double-legged kickstand, hydraulic disk brakes, and its 20″ tires help keep the bike’s center of gravity low and stable. The rear Hooptie rack is compatible with a number of rack-mounted child seats for really young passengers, and can be outfitted with a seat pad for a comfortable ride for older kids.
