Automotive News Roundup; October 11, 2024: Nissan to launch vehicle-to-grid technology in 2026

London, (Oilandgaspress) ––Nissan today announced it will launch affordable bi-directional charging on selected electric vehicles in 2026. The project progresses the commitment made in Nissan’s business plan, The Arc, to deliver differentiated innovations that enable the EV transition, while unlocking new revenue streams. It also supports the company’s long-term vision, Ambition 2030, to create a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology enables EV owners to use electricity stored in their car’s battery to power their homes or sell it back into the grid.
EVs equipped with V2G technology can play a crucial role in integrating and increasing the mix of renewables into the energy supply by storing electricity generated by wind or solar and directing it into the grid when needed, reducing dependency on fossil fuels. The project is underpinned by Nissan’s extensive experience in V2G, with a total of approximately 40 pilot projects conducted in various markets around the world throughout the past decade.

Following a successful year-long trial at The University of Nottingham, UK, Nissan has become the first automotive company to gain G99 Grid code certification1 with an AC-based solution2. A G99 certificate enables the holder to supply electricity into the UK national energy supply* Read More

Chinese battery manufacturers, led by CATL, are introducing new batteries capable of superfast charging, achieving 80% charge in under 10 minutes. The world’s biggest battery makers are working to make electric vehicles more attractive to hesitant buyers by offering a five-minute charge time for a decent range that would give drivers the same superfast experience as they would have at a gas station.

The Chinese battery manufacturers are leading in the race to superfast charging as their lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are not as susceptible to overheating as the nickel-cobalt chemistry in the batteries of their competitors in South Korea. China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), the world’s biggest battery maker, which supplies batteries to Tesla and BMW, among others, unveiled in April the world’s first LFP battery that achieves a range above 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) with 4C superfast charging. General Motors hosted Wall Street financial analysts at our flexible manufacturing site in Spring Hill, Tennessee to share our optimism about 2025.

GM’s financial performance reflects both continued strength in gas- and diesel-powered trucks and SUVs and an improving financial outlook for our electric vehicles. The electric vehicle market continues to grow. Our attractive portfolio is taking EV market share from our competitors and pulling in many new customers. And we are making rapid progress toward EV profitability.

GM has the most diverse EV portfolio in the industry, which is helping drive our growth. In the third quarter we set another GM EV sales record – and we’re now the number two seller of EVs in North America. We remain on track to build and wholesale about 200,000 GM-branded EVs this year.

We have long range, affordable models like the Chevrolet Equinox EV, luxury EVs like the Cadillac LYRIQ, and powerful, capable electric trucks like the GMC HUMMER EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. No matter what you like to drive, there’s a GM EV for you. And we’re going to continue adding new EV models in the months ahead, including the Cadillac VISTIQ and OPTIQ, and the return of the Chevy Bolt in late 2025.

We’re also taking steps to address one of the biggest concerns of people reluctant to consider EVs – range anxiety.

Most GM EVs in North America now boast a range of more than 300 miles, and we will continue to add more range – the new Silverado EV RST can go nearly 500 miles on a full charge. Meanwhile, GM is collaborating with other automakers, charging companies like EVgo, and travel center operators like Pilot Flying J to make charging EVs easier and more convenient.
