ALDI Portugal has chosen EDP to install and operate more than 650 fast charging points in its stores in mainland Portugal. This is the largest electric mobility partnership ever undertaken in the country and also the largest signed by EDP in the Iberian Peninsula.

EDP Comercial has been chosen by ALDI, one of the leading retail companies in Portugal and Europe, to provide electric mobility solutions that will be available in all stores in the country with parking facilities under the brand. This partnership includes the installation of charging points in more than 140 existing stores with parking facilities, as well as in new ALDI stores that will open throughout this year and next year. EDP Comercial will also operate the chargers that are already installed in 34 of these stores. In total, the partnership includes more than 650 charging points in the MOBI.E public network, which can be used by any driver and using all CEME (Electric Mobility Electricity Retailers). The power of the fast charging devices to be installed in store car parks will vary between 60kW and 120kW. This will allow ALDI customers to choose the speed at which they want to recharge their vehicle while they shop.

With this partnership, EDP and ALDI promote decarbonization and the reduction of their customers’ environmental footprint, contributing to the supermarket chain’s ambitious sustainability goals. Faced with the challenges of climate change, limited natural resources, loss of biodiversity and growing demand, acting sustainably is strategic and fundamental for ALDI Portugal. The sustainability work of the ALDI Nord Group, to which ALDI Portugal belongs, is based on four main areas — climate protection, responsible and sustainable supply chains, more environmentally friendly packaging and combating food waste. In particular, and with regard to climate protection, the retailer aims to reduce emissions across the entire Group (ALDI Nord) by 55% by 2030.

One of the leading companies investing in electric mobility in Portugal, EDP Comercial has sought to expand its public charging infrastructure in convenient locations that provide the best charging experience, as well as the power appropriate to the available charging time, for electric vehicle users, through partnerships with companies present in consumers’ daily lives. It is therefore important that these partners have a presence distributed throughout the country, such as ALDI, in order to guarantee a network from North to South of Portugal.

“The creation of a robust charging infrastructure is crucial to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility. That is why, at EDP, we are very pleased to enter into this long-term partnership with ALDI Portugal, the largest electric mobility partnership ever established in the country, to bring consumers the convenience of charging their vehicles while shopping, anywhere in the country,” highlights Carlos Moreira, director of EDP Comercial.

“We are delighted to partner with EDP Comercial, which plays a vital role in finding practical and efficient solutions in Portugal. Together, we are paving the way for decarbonisation, offering our customers an increasingly sustainable in-store experience, while raising awareness and promoting the use of electric vehicles in the country,” says João Braz Teixeira, Managing Director Expansion & Real Estate at ALDI Portugal.

These new charging points are in addition to the more than 3,300 that EDP Comercial already has in operation or under implementation in Portugal, in more than 195 municipalities across all districts of the country. With this constant growth in the number of available sockets, the number of charging points on EDP’s public network also continues to break records. Since EDP began investing in the development of electric mobility in Portugal, more than two million charging sessions have been carried out at the company’s points connected to the public grid.

These charges have enabled more than 200 million kilometres to be travelled using only electricity and have avoided more than 20 thousand tonnes of CO2 that would have been emitted by combustion vehicles. About EDP EDP is a global utility with a presence in four regions — Europe, North America, South America and Asia. The company produces, distributes and supplies electricity and aims to be 100% renewable by 2030. In the first quarter, the company exceeded 98% renewable production. EDP also invests in electric mobility in Portugal and Spain, with around six thousand charging points in operation or under development in the Iberian Peninsula.

Through EDP Comercial, the company is also an Electricity Marketer for Electric Mobility in the public grid and provides private charging solutions for homes, buildings and businesses. EDP’s business strategy for 2024–2026 sets out ambitious plans to invest €17 billion in the energy transition. EDP already holds a leading global position in distributed solar generation projects and is a leader among European players.
