With summer wrapping up (and so quickly), it may be a bit late for a story on improving Airbnb properties. On the other hand, those properties don’t disappear when the summer ends, and they are in constant need of improvement. Also, with more and more people driving electric cars every day, I’m sure hosts are getting more and more requests to install EV chargers, or simply figuring out that this is where the market is headed on their own.
The good news is that ChargePoint recently teamed up with Airbnb to try to make it easier and cheaper on them. ChargePoint is offering 20% off a ChargePoint charger and $100 off installation for Airbnb hosts. The first 1,000 Airbnb hosts to buy a ChargePoint charger also get an extra $200 off. This promotion started in May, but it’s still on ChargePoint’s website, so the 1,000 milestone presumably hasn’t been hit yet.
You do have to make the purchase through the ChargePoint website, so follow that link above if you’re interested. (No, we don’t have any association with this and don’t get any financial kickbacks of any sort.)
“With Airbnb, we are enabling more EV charging for drivers where they need it and helping Airbnb hosts appeal to more travelers by delivering a frictionless charging experience for their guests,” said Rick Wilmer, CEO at ChargePoint. “Through this partnership, we have created an innovative model to deliver integrated charging solutions and services.”
Also, frankly, ChargePoint needs to sell chargers, and this is a massive pool of potential or even likely buyers. It’s just common sense to try to tap into that community and become the default EV charging station company for Airbnb hosts.
ChargePoint lays out a 4-step process for how this process goes:
- Select a package: Discover a set of products with special pricing for Airbnb Hosts and choose the right one for your place.
- Install the charger: Answer a few questions to determine the installation service that best fits your home.
- Update your listing: Highlight EV charging as an amenity and appeal to the growing population of EV drivers.
- Attract EV drivers: Listings that offer an EV charger are booked for more nights and generate more income on average compared to listings without an EV charger, according to internal Airbnb data.*
Sounds pretty simple. Also, I had never seen that Airbnb locations with EV chargers tend to get booked for more nights. That’s an interest stat that may or may not be from having the EV charger, but it’s certainly got to get those dollars signs popping into a host’s eyeballs.
Of course, one of the best things for Airbnb guests with this partnership is that many if not most EV drivers in the US have a ChargePoint account and have the app on our phones. So, we know it would be an easy process to charge our electric cars and we wouldn’t need to fiddle with yet another app or something.
“We are thrilled to join forces with ChargePoint to help Hosts meet growing demand for electric vehicle chargers from guests. By making it more affordable for Hosts to install EV chargers, we are empowering them to take more sustainable actions and appeal to guests who are interested in this amenity,” said Ameet Konkar, Airbnb’s Director of Sustainability.
No doubt.
