If you were born more than a decade before the turn of the century, you probably remember when GPS started appearing in cars. It was wild. For those of you who never had to travel with paper maps and stop to unfold them, find the tiny little spot on the map where you were, somehow figure out how to get where you were going, and then carefully fold them back up and remember all that, you have no idea what you were missing. It was wild. Well, transitioning us beyond that, TomTom was a major player in the mind-blowing new GPS market. TomTom was the name in the game.
Admittedly, I feel like I haven’t heard the name in years. I don’t have a TomTom in my car, of course, since I have a Tesla navigation system. However, apparently, TomTom is still around! In fact, today, the company sent us some news that is quite cool. “TomTom (TOM2), the specialist in location technology, today announced that it has mapped more than 2 million electric vehicle (EV) charging points worldwide,” the company wrote. “This milestone highlights TomTom’s commitment to supporting the shift to zero-emission driving by providing automakers with comprehensive and reliable EV navigation solutions.”
First of all, congratulations to TomTom for surviving this long — through so many major technological shifts! Secondly, we have to appreciate that the company still has its eyes on the future and is putting effort into solid EV charging station mapping. “As EV adoption continues to rise, drivers need EV routing and navigation they can trust. TomTom combines extensive global coverage with rigorous data verification to ensure that every charging point is complete, accurate, and free of duplicates, helping car manufacturers provide seamless EV navigation to their customers,” the company adds. And who can disagree with that?
“Our goal is to make every EV journey worry-free,” said Manuela Locarno Ajayi, SVP for Product Engineering, TomTom. “Mapping over 2 million charging points demonstrates our ongoing support for automakers and partners as they expand EV services and shape the future of emission-free mobility.”
Well, that sounds nice. Thanks, TomTom.
